State energy pathway · New Mexico

Start with the energy systems shaping New Mexico.

New Mexico ranks #2 in U.S. crude oil production and generates 50% of its in-state electricity from wind and solar. That gives New Mexico students a clear view of how established energy industries and active research institutions can shape opportunities in the same landscape.

Why Energy Matters in New Mexico

Legacy Production Base

New Mexico is the #2 crude oil-producing state and #3 natural gas producer in the nation. The Permian Basin in the state's east set a production record in 2024, generating more than 2 million barrels of oil per day. Students who understand this production backbone learn how any shift in New Mexico's energy sources begins from a real, complex starting point.

Solar Research and Wind Power

Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque operates the National Solar Thermal Testing Facility, which collects data on how solar thermal components perform and operate in real systems. Wind generates 37% of New Mexico's in-state electricity (ranked #7 nationally) and solar provides 13% of the state's electricity generation. Students who connect measurement skills to how New Mexico generates and tests its own power systems learn how data integrity is foundational to the technical work their state depends on.

Latimer Energy Academy helps students in New Mexico build the measurement habits that connect local energy use to the research and production work shaping their state's future.

The Smart Meter: Energy Investigation

New Mexico's energy economy depends on record oil and natural gas production—more than 2 million barrels per day in 2024—and significant industrial electricity demand. Precision measurement and data integrity are foundational to managing systems at this scale, and the Smart Meter project teaches students these essential skills.

Data Integrity & Efficiency

Students can separate clean measurements from noise, connecting measurement precision to the data integrity that production operations and industrial energy managers depend on in New Mexico.

Included in LEA curriculum

Pilot proof

Students enjoy the work because it feels real.

In January 2026, 39 fourth-grade students in Indianapolis completed every lesson from start to finish — coding real pocket computers (microcontrollers), collecting live energy readings, and presenting findings to an audience.
