Accessibility Statement

Latimer Energy Academy is committed to making our platform accessible to all learners, educators, and families — including those using assistive technology, with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive disabilities. Accessibility is not a one-time project; it is ongoing work we prioritize every day. If you encounter barriers while using LEA, we want to know so we can fix them.

Our Conformance Target

Latimer Energy Academy targets WCAG 2.2 Level AA conformance as our accessibility standard. This means our platform is built to be navigable by keyboard, readable by screen readers, perceivable in high contrast, and usable by people with a wide range of abilities.

Our site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA — meaning we have successfully implemented many conformance requirements, and some content may not yet meet all criteria. We are actively working toward full conformance. You can learn more about WCAG 2.2 standards at W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2.

We perform design and development reviews against WCAG 2.2 AA criteria and conduct screen reader testing during each major release. If you encounter an accessibility barrier before our formal audit is complete, please contact us — we will address your specific need as a priority.

Accessibility Features

Latimer Energy Academy includes built-in features to support users with different accessibility needs. These are engineered into the platform from the beginning — not added as an afterthought.

Keyboard Navigation

All interactive elements — buttons, links, form fields, navigation menus, and disclosure accordions — are operable via keyboard alone.

A skip navigation link is present at the top of every page, allowing keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repeated navigation.

Screen Reader Compatibility

Pages use semantic HTML (headings, landmarks, lists) and ARIA attributes where necessary to convey structure and state to screen readers.

Sufficient Color Contrast

Text and interactive elements meet WCAG 2.2 AA minimum contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text and non-text elements).

Scalable Text

All text scales correctly up to 200% browser zoom without loss of content or functionality. Type sizes use relative units (rem).

Reduced Motion Support

Animations respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query. Users who have reduced-motion enabled in their OS will see static alternatives.

Focus Indicators

All interactive elements have clearly visible focus indicators that meet WCAG 2.4.11 (Focus Appearance) requirements. Focus indicators are never suppressed.

Touch Target Sizing

All interactive elements have a minimum touch target size of 44×44 CSS pixels, supporting users on mobile and tablet devices, and users with motor disabilities.

Alt Text for Images

All meaningful images include descriptive alt text. Decorative images are marked with empty alt attributes to be ignored by screen readers.

Form Labels and Error Messages

All form fields have descriptive labels. Error messages are programmatically associated with their field and describe how to correct the error.

Known Limitations

We know our platform is not perfect. Here are the specific limitations we are aware of and actively working to address:

Energy Simulations

Some interactive energy simulations are designed as visual-first experiences. If you rely on text-based descriptions or keyboard navigation, you may encounter limitations. We are developing text-based equivalents and keyboard-navigable versions. If you need an accessible alternative right now, contact us.

MakeCode Embedded Editor

The embedded MakeCode block editor (from Microsoft) is delivered via an iframe and may not be fully keyboard-navigable or compatible with all screen readers. MakeCode is governed by Microsoft’s accessibility documentation. If you need an alternative way to access block-based coding lessons, please reach out.

Third-Party Embeds and Resources

Some content sections include embedded videos, external resource links, or third-party tools. These third-party resources may not meet LEA’s accessibility standards. We cannot guarantee the accessibility of external content. If you run into a barrier with a linked resource, please report it to us.

Request an Accommodation

If you are an instructor, parent, or student using Latimer Energy Academy and you need accessibility accommodations — such as alternative formats, assistive technology support, or customized content delivery — we want to help. Contact us at privacy@latimerenergyacademy.com with details about your accommodation request. We aim to respond within 5 business days.

Accessibility Feedback

Found a barrier we haven’t listed? Please tell us. Your feedback directly improves the platform for everyone.

When reporting an issue, it helps to include the URL of the page, the assistive technology you’re using, and a description of what you expected to happen versus what happened.
